Is Hepatitis C a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)?
Simple question but some people see confusion in the answers, lets dumb it down and clear it all up.
Is Hepatitis C a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)?
No. Hepatitis C is not primarily or frequently transmitted via sexual intercourse or other intimate sexual contact.
Can I catch Hepatitis C as a result of sexual intercourse or other intimate sexual contact
Yes. Hepatitis C is a blood borne virus, it requires somebody’s infected to blood to be “forced” into your body. Situations such as this occur more frequently during sex than at “normal” times.
See, told you it was straightforward

I have had Hep C From IV drug use in the 70’s. I am 52 years old with Genotype 1. I am a non responder from Peg & Ribaviron. I have stage 3 liver disease. I have brought my ALT / AST to normal by using Maximum Milk Thistle. I hope this will buy me time. I live my life in a constant state of fatigue & aches. I have a hepatoligist treating me at Univ. of Miami liver disease center. My Dr. tells me that this VX-950 is the drug they have been waiting for. This drug will be the cure he tells me. He is very encouraged by this new drug.
Thank You Vertex Pharmacy.

My husband was diagnosed with Hep C in 2003. He had 3 possible causes for contracting the virus 1. Tattoos in the early 70’s 2. A number of blood transfusions in the 70’s 3. IV drug using in the 70’s. Having been given the statistics by his hepatologist and liver specialist nurse the most likely cause was IV drug abuse. The chances of contracting the virus during sex is highly unlikely unless sex is traumatic to both partners and they sustain a wound which bleeds and so can become infected. My husband and I have been sexual partners for 26 years, I have been tested negative for the virus, we have used condoms about 10 times in all those years. Because of the stigma surrounding Hep C we find that many use a more acceptable reason for contracting the virus than IV drug abuse, sex just seems the most acceptable if there is no other obvious reason. For all of you who are unsure remember it is a blood borne virus so try not to worry about normal sexual activity.

Hi, partners of hep c should more worry about cuts with blood etc then sex in my experience. I had 3 long term partners and we had sex without potection even during monthly periods, and when I found about Hep C they got tested and nobody had it. Does anyone know about cuts and scratches that started to heel, no blood, but still have no new skin - can I go in swimming pools with them?

Trouble with Hep-C and getting anyone to ever give you a straight answer comes from 2 places.
One is the shear power of the desease- it can kill ya.
And 2- is the lawyers that have made sure that no doctor in his right mind will ever- ever state clearly there is a clear indication that there is no chance of transmital in “any” circumstnace! SO that leaves all of us to have to sit out here and guess…. and to worry if I have done something to harm a partner I have been with….or caught something from just enjoying one night with a person I really enjoyed being with.
I have Hep-C, and have never been with a sex partner in 35 years that Hep-C positive. I have never placed a needle in my arm to do drugs, never had a transfusion. I did enjoy the unfortunate inoculations I recieved while in the Army using Air injected serums- which has now been attributed to being the cause of infection in over 62% of all Vietman era Veterans who contracted Hep-C. In short- an air gun with a dirty needle!
I went without symtom for 7-8 years then became deathly ill for 3+ weeks. Treated without explaination with huge doses of anti-biotics, I recovered never to have a re-occurance though I was later shown to now be a Hep-C infected carrier (during attempting to give blood to the RedCross). I have enjoyed 20 years of mariages, and unprotected sex- without infecting my partner. I continue to remain symtom free without explaination.
Do I worry about everything I do that may harm another person? Absolutely. Be open/honest and take care of your health. Bottom line- unless you can somehow physically get your blood to find a way to enter another persons bloodstream…. you can’t give it to anyone. Do something risky with another person that may open that opportunity to happening….you may have condemed them to sharing this disease with you!

Here is one that is a real shocker for anybody needing surgery that will require the use of cadaver bone, i.e. neck surgery. As recent as 2004 I had a spinal fusion and contracted the Hep C virus from the bone tissue that was used instead of my own bone being harvested from my leg. I HIGHLY recommend anybody having any operation involving a choice of using their own bone or tissue matter from a cadaver to ALWAYS use your own. I was told if I was a smoker or a drinker that I should not use the cadaver bone because it sometimes does not take but I was never told there was any risk of disease. Please take it from me, the pain you will have to go through from having your own bone harvested can in no way compare to the pain and suffering you will go through to fight this horrible virus. It took me 48 weeks of intense treatment to become non detected. I’m not cured but I am in remission so to speak. I have to be tested every 6 months to be safe but for now I am virus free.
If you or somebody you know is going to have any type of operation requiring the use of cadaver tissue please reconsider. If just one person is spared the hell I had to endure from this horrible virus by reading this comment then my prayer will be answered. I wish I would have known there was any risk at all before I had my operation.
The best way to prevent this horrible virus from being spread is by knowledge and word of mouth. Please take the time to spread this to anybody you know that may be having any type of operation requiring cadaver tissue. Because of HIPPA laws it is impossible to find out who the tissue donor is or was so please don’t take the chance. It’s just not worth it.

While we are waiting, there is a new supplement that I use called MMS that works very well. I have not done blood test, but my symptoms are relieved. We won’t know for awhile, but this stuff is promising. Google Jim Humble Adam Abraham MMS
